Men: Got Love Handles? Hit This NYC Spa

By Jeannette Park

Fashion Wire Daily NY - Men, you've heard all the names for ‘em: Love Handles, spare tire, flub around the tub. Whatever you call it, those extra calories you've been sporting around your waist don't seem to go away, no matter how many crunches you do. But a new treatment at for-men-only Nickel spa in Chelsea might be just the trick to help you trim away those unwanted "bottom shelves." It’s called the Love Handles Wrap.

This one-of-a-kind, 60-minute treatment is designed to reduce the appearance of love handles around the midsection, starting with the application of Nickel's new cellulite product specifically designed for men's fat tissues. The cream combines enzymes extracted from such ingredients as pineapple and caffeine to boost blood circulation and break through the links in the chain of fatty acid molecules and cut them down to size.

After applying the cream to the targeted area, the body is tightly bound with plastic wrapping to ensure it is absorbed into the skin, followed by intermittent vigorous massaging and a second plastic wrapping, making this an aggressively effective way to reduce the spare-tire syndrome. (You could stop eating donuts, as well.)

Located in a expansive stone structure in the heart of Chelsea, the front area of the 4,500-square-foot spa not only serves as a boutique, but as a buffer zone from the actual treatment rooms. Founder of the spa's eponymous skincare line, president Philippe Dumont created this area so men wouldn't feel like they're entering a women's space. "My philosophy is that men want a straightforward approach - nothing magical, no fancy contraptions - just basic, clean skin care," Dumont said.

And that's what the Nickel line is all about. After ten years of working with such cosmetic firms as Chanel and Christian Dior, the 33-year-old Dumont wanted to create a line without the fuss, frills and exaggerated claims found in some women's cosmetics. Knowing that men want results right away, the products in Nickel's (which in French is slang for spotless) line of scrubs, lotions and gels have non-greasy textures that give visible results.

Since a man's skin is thicker than a woman's, all of Nickel's formulas contain a higher percentage of active ingredients than found in women's products. Tensor agents, caffeine and green coffee are just some of the elements used to calm aggravated male skin, and the jojoba wax beads in the Super Clean Body Scrub provide the grit that men crave while removing dead cells and soothing rough areas. Plus, the heavy metallic, square packaging (including the body scrub, which comes in a container shaped like a gasoline can) is designed so a dude doesn't have to feel like he's raiding his girlfriend's cabinet.

Starting out with two spas in Paris, Dumont brought the concept to New York last October because he felt there was a void in the men's beauty industry. Although the haven offers the same trickling water, soothing lights, plush robes and comfy slippers that other spas do, they do have one rule - no women allowed.

Already popular with the likes of non-women such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Issey Miyake and John Malkovich, Nickel's New York outpost boasts eight treatment rooms, a napping area, nail treatment spaces and a VIP room, complete with private entrance and shower. Upon entering the spa, visitors take ten seconds in the Decompression Chamber, designed like the interior of a submarine, where blue lighting relaxes and clears the mind. And the front retail space sells other top-shelf product lines besides Nickel, such as The Art of Shaving and Brave Soldier.

And if you're looking for a large pitcher of water infused with fresh lemon slices, you're in the wrong place. Nickel serves Glacéau Smart Water straight from the bottle. Just like a man wants.

Nickel, 77 Eighth Avenue (14th Street). 212.242.3203.
