L.A. Eyeworks' New Face

By Stephen Milioti

Fashion Wire Daily NY - Gai Gherardi and Barbara McReynolds, co-owners of L.A. Eyeworks, changed the face (and image) of eyeglass design when they opened their original Melrose Avenue store in 1979. Their collection of always-innovative designs can be found internationally at independent optical stores, and on the noses of designers, architects and even celebs from Cameron Diaz to Charlize Theron.

Now, they've opened the first L.A. Eyeworks store dedicated to the L.A. Eyeworks collection, right on Beverly Blvd., and have surrounded themselves with art and architecture greats to create it.

The results are stunning. While preserving the vintage curving corner façade, influential L.A.-based architect Neil Denari, who is a leader in integrating digital technology in architecture, continued that theme in this 1,250-square-foot store. An exterior L.E.D. outpost outside above the entrance streams news and culture, and a mod blue and white interior mixes form and function perfectly - for example, a group of wheeled furniture elements jigsaw-fit together to make a sculpture-like piece when not in use.

"This store is a setting for the intricate interplay between architecture, art, and design, where each medium works reflexively with the other," Denari tells FWD. "The architecture is built, the art is installed, the glasses are designed, then produced. Everything works together to create a smooth environment."

Gherardi and McReynolds also commissioned artist Jim Isermann to make a permanent wall installation for the store - vacuum-formed panels in a grid, which perfectly match the techno-luxe architecture.

"We were looking for the experience of that rare air. And how you get that is through the convergence of light, color and form. By bringing these elements together, that's what we got," says Gherardi. "In the vaporous, light-filled environment that Neil Denari achieved, our eyeglasses read as exclamation points."

"It is so soothing, yet exciting," adds McReynolds.

The new store showcases the more than 100 frame designs in the current collection, all created by Gherardi and McReynolds. It's the first time so many have been shown together, and four-eyed fans everywhere are thrilled.
